Corporate video production diary: day 17

Is this Day 17?  The days and nights seem to merge into one as we work to fine tune the edits.  We’re now wrapping up the project by encoding for various web video and higher quality formats.  So that’s it for this video production diary this time!  I would have liked to add more detail but time just did not allow - a trait of the business!

More blogs soon on creative film and video…

Finalising review changes from the client and fine tuning audio and colour correction is the task for today before we output in various web video and high quality formats for delivery.  Some of the computing power required to convert from HD to other formats is very high, so hopefully we can ‘batch’ some of the work overnight.

Over two weeks in and we’re nearing the final stages of post production – very swift progress.  The volume of material to be delivered is high on this project and with all footage in HD and multi-cameras, it certainly has stretched the FCP editing system we’re working on.

The client team is currently reviewing the results from around the world via web video, so a truly international project!

Too busy to say much here other than web video production has its challenges along with all other formats – getting that final high quality output entails a fair degree of research and tweaking… and that’s what we’re involved with now!

Things have been hectic on the post production front and we are undertaking tests on web video in relation to data rates, frame sizes, etc.  This is all part of the process to achieve the best quality bearing in mind varying broadband connection rates across the world and different video players in what is essentially a developing technology.

The high-definition source looks great on the monitors we are using for editing, so our challenge is to transfer that to the web whilst losing as little detail as possible.  There are many schools of thought as to the best encoders and data rates but it all depends on the target audience and the equipment they will be accessing it on.

Graphical refinements and final editing of the rough cuts of the video clips is well underway and we’re now turning our attention to the technical aspect of delivering the material on the internet from a High Definition source.  Could write so much more but no time!

We’re well into the post production phase now trying graphical elements, constructing rough cuts and trying ideas before the refinement process and delivery.  We’re also sorting some technical issues regarding the conversion process to deliver on high quality web video.

It’s busy!  More soon…

Headed to the editing studio in London today to look at the rushes from the corporate shoot that took place on Thursday and Friday last week.  This was the first time I’ve seen the footage on a big screen and it looks excellent – good lighting – not too harsh and with good colour balance.  The audio was also good even though we had to contend with some ambient noise from air conditioning systems and computer servers on the shoot.

The two camera set-up worked pretty well and provides good options for the editor.  Our editor (who goes by the name of Fab) is using Final Cut Pro on some pretty powerful Apple Mac hardware which easily handles the high definition XDCAM footage.

So post production is going well so far as Fab puts some rough cuts together.  More soon…

Today was a packed schedule for the filming of a conference in central London.  These corporate events always have their challenges and you have to react quickly and be adaptable to record the key presentations and audience responses.

We used solid state memory cards to capture the considerable volume of footage – this technology enabled us to not only film continuously but also to transfer and backup the footage quickly.

So production was busy, now into ‘post production’ and more on that soon…
