An HD thought for the day

It’s amazing how the introduction of High Definition (HD) video has contributed to the massive amount of column inches in the press, forums and websites over the last years.

Despite some of the benefits, I think you have to look at the introduction of new technology in a very balanced way – all of the traditional skills of film making in my opinion, still apply regardless of the introduction of a new format.  A hig-res HD version of your poorly lit, poorly scripted short film will not impress anyone!

I feel as a professional, it is best to stand back from the technology and look at the situation objectively – don’t subscribe to the film or HD camp – just assess each project and select the best kit for the job.  Both HD and film have their merits, but the traditional skills of film making will always apply – composition, lighting, story, pace… the list goes on!

I read an excellent IOV article recently that explained the benefits of hiring gear – we often see these new toys and yearn to own them like a new car, however, to avoid a loft full of redundant kit, the hire route could be safer!

If you have an HD versus film story, let me know!
